Karen tightened her arms around the box, turning slightly in preparation for escape, should it become necessary.
“I already gave you my promise,” she skirted around the need for a second lie. “Thank you for cleaning the shoes. I have to go now.”
She could feel the little man’s eyes on her back all the way to her car, and was relieved when she was locked safely inside the vehicle with her precious heels still safely clutched in her arms.
