Although the rangers were avowed to protect the innocent, Felicity had never heard of them traveling this far north. She suspected that her father must have paid the king dearly for their support. Intrigued, Felicity crept closer. She couldn’t help herself. She’d never seen a ranger before and would likely never have this opportunity again.

At last she was close enough to hear the deep rumble of his voice as he murmured to the horse, and a whisper of excitement swept along her skin. He spoke in such a low tone, it almost sounded like a growl.

She recalled one winter when the knights had captured a wolf and dragged it back to the castle to use in training her father’s hounds. This ranger reminded her of that beast. Feral and dangerous yet retaining an aura of pride and nobility.

A soft hand touched abruptly caught at her shoulder and Felicity nearly screamed. Whirling about she was relieved to discover that it was Adelaide. Her sister’s eyes were still puffy and red from the tears which had flown so freely only moments before, but she was calm and collected as she looked over Felicity’s shoulder to where the ranger stood.

“That is the ranger who saved my life.” Adelaide murmured. “His name is Jerrard. He is their leader.”
